Default 2 day wait

hello,

can i suggest that this 2 day wait be put in the welcome email - or even better before you sign up - in big writing

i find that i don't usually sign up to a forum until i have something i want/need to say. and this time i even had to sign up twice (old forum.whisher is still accepting sign-ups, though they need to be approved before you can do anything)

and 24 hours later i discover that i will have to wait another day.

grrrrrrrrrrrrrr

This information is stated in the welcome email, I quote:

Thanks for registering at the Whisher Forums! We are glad you have chosen to be a part of our community and we hope you enjoy your stay.

In order to prevent automated spam from reaching the forum, we have established a set of measures that have been proven to cut it down drastically - this is for your benefit, and that of all of our users.

During the first two days after registering, you will only be allowed to start a new thread in the Newcomers forum, where you can ask for urgent help should you require it. You cannot however answer other threads, but you can browse and search all other forums. If you have a problem, please search before you post, in case it has already been solved - this really helps in cutting down redundancy of posts.
So while I agree it would be better to place this in the registration form, I considered the welcome email a good enough way - I guess like instruction manuals, they are the first things that get put in the bin

I will remove the two day waiting period, but maintain the five-post no-URL restriction, we need to have some form of protection from spam bots. I have seen other forums having to just erase and start from scratch due to the floods of spam they were getting. On the old phpBB forum we had a ratio of 3 spam bots for every legitimate user.

Can I ask where you found the link to the registration page? The default index page on forum.whisher.com redirects to this new forum, so unless you bypassed this and opened the registration page directly, I don't see how this could have happened. Regardless, the old forums are now removed, so no new registrations can take place there.

Your user status should update automatically in a short while, after I remove the waiting period.

Best regards, I hope you stick around, just sorry your introduction was so bumpy

Mike

Hi - thanks for your reply.

I found the old forums directly from google (but some threads on here still link to threads on the old forum).

I have come back and hope to enjoy participating.

Si.

PS I guess I should have read the emails before mouthing off.

Thanks for pointing out the Google leads, they are now 404'd as I removed the forum software, I will create a custom 404 page that directs to the new forums.

As for the emails, I understand it is easy to miss the customized message, most forums just send out the standard pre-packaged welcome email that comes with them.

Best regards,

Mike
